We've all seen the pictures and probably heard some version of the story. A strange man with a smile that is just a little too big. But where did the Smiling Man actually come from? Turns out, that isn't as easy to answer as I thought it would be. The story takes us back to John Keel, a strange encounter in New Jersey in 1966, a few things that sound more like hauntings to me, and yes, Indrid Cold. I teased his story way back in Episode 70 as a tale yet to be told. Apparently it took me 117 episodes to get back to it. Then there's the Smiling Man most people know today. That story has a very different history, and once Deb finds out where it came from, she has a few things to say about it. So are all these smiling strangers connected? I don't know. I'm not even convinced they should all be called the same thing. But there is something damned creepy about a stranger standing in the dark and smiling at you for absolutely no reason. Episode 187: The Smiling Man / Grinning Man
ฟังแล้วWe've all seen the pictures and probably heard some version of the story. A strange man with a smile that is just a little too big. But where did the Smiling Man actually come from? Episode 186: Black Eyed Children
ฟังแล้วThis week we’re talking about the Black-Eyed Children. A subject we first explored in Episode 14. But this time, we're concentrating on the encounters rather than the theories surrounding these mysterious children. Brian Bethel's 1996 encounter in Abilene, Texas, helped bring the phenomenon into public awareness. Two boys approached his car asking for a ride, but their behavior and completely black eyes left him terrified. We also examine a 1998 encounter in a Portland parking garage and a 2010 report from an Ohio data center involving two teenagers who reportedly vanished from surveillance-camera view. We discuss the similarities between the accounts. The recurring requests for permission to enter a car or building. Are these unexplained encounters, mistaken perceptions, or stories that have contributed to a modern urban legend? Episode 185: Ghosts of the Tsunami
ฟังแล้วIn the months after the devastating 2011 Japanese tsunami, people began reporting encounters with those who had died. Some saw figures wandering through neighborhoods that no longer existed. Others believed the dead had returned to visit the living. Then there were the taxi drivers. Seven drivers in Ishinomaki told a university researcher about mysterious passengers, including a young woman who asked to be taken to an area destroyed by the tsunami. When the driver questioned her destination, she asked him something chilling. “Have I died?” This episode, Deb and I look at the Ghosts of the Tsunami and the strange possibility that some of the dead weren't haunting anyone at all. They may have simply been trying to find their way home. Episode 184: The Convent That Started Biting
ฟังแล้วSometime in the fifteenth century, a nun in a German convent reportedly began biting the other sisters. Then, according to later accounts, the women she bit began biting others. Before long, similar stories were appearing in convents across Germany, Holland, and even Rome. This episode, Deb and I dig into the strange story of the Biting Nuns. Was it imitation, a centuries-old story growing with every retelling, or something the people of the time would have taken very seriously: demonic possession? Five hundred years later, we may never know what really happened behind those convent walls. But one question remains. Was the nun doing the biting, or was something else doing it through her? Episode 183: Death Comes for You
ฟังแล้วWhat happens when Death comes for you? The Grim Reaper may be one of the most recognizable figures in the world, but where did he come from, and why do people still claim to see figures remarkably like him around hospitals, nursing homes, and the dying? This week on 4 Ever Paranormal, Bill and Deb begin with three very real encounters that looked like Death himself, including a black-robed figure standing above the entrance to a hospital. From there, they follow the Reaper into much darker territory: the ferryman waiting to carry the dead across the river, mysterious hooded figures reported around the dying, deathbed visitors, and the unsettling idea that when our time finally comes, something may be waiting for us. Maybe the Grim Reaper is nothing more than a medieval symbol that never quite left us. Or maybe Death has worn many faces.
